In one of the many rooms of the old villa, silent telephones — one rested on a worn-out table and one hung on the wall — disconnected, waiting, forgotten. The wallpaper, once rich in color, has faded into a dull, greenish hue, curling at the edges like the pages of an old book. Time has drained the room of its purpose, yet the echoes of past conversations seem to linger in the dust.
The contrast struck me. The stillness of the phones against the presence of a doll, placed there like she, too, had been waiting. Haven’t we all been there? Waiting and hoping for a call?
Longing for connection is a feeling we all recognize, and in today’s world, it seems more present than ever. This corner of a room, with everything left behind in its place, and that familiar emotion wove the story on their own.
I couldn’t help myself — Blondie’s Call Me! chorus kept looping in my head, like an earworm I couldn’t shake. That was the feeling I wanted to capture, that restless anticipation, the kind that builds up inside and never quite fades. I tried to channel it through the doll, giving her just enough presence to be felt, just enough emotion to exist somewhere between stillness and a silent scream.
This piece plays with that feeling — the weight of anticipation, the quiet ache of being forgotten. The surreal retouching enhances the emotional tension, exaggerating everything just enough to blur the boundaries of surrealism.
